Our California-based winery, Bonterra Organic Estates, is the largest winery in the U.S. to be named a Certified B Corporation and is committed to using business as a force for good. Since our founding we have been driven by excellence, innovation and longstanding commitments to the environment and responsible business practices.

Our Mission

We aim to build a collection of distinct brands that supports long-term, sustainable growth through innovation, excellence and impact.

Our Values

Our values are the heart of our culture. They guide us and are reflected in every aspect of our business, from our vineyards to our communities.

Integrity

Everything we do is rooted in integrity and respect—for the land, for people, and for future generations. From our farming practices to employee culture, community involvement and advocacy for causes that matter, we strive to be a force of good.

Collaboration

Our dedicated team—from winemaking to sales—is driven by a spirit of collaboration. We place no limits on creativity. Our team, in turn, pours passion and dedication into every bottle of wine crafted.

Impact

We have dramatically reduced our water and energy use, achieved Zero Waste and operate our winery entirely on green power. Building on our B Corp commitment to be Net Zero by 2030, we are more than halfway to our goal of being climate positive by 2030. But our purposeful approach is much broader than a simple philosophy and goes much further than any metrics convey. We aim to continue to transform our business to restore, revitalize and regenerate ecosystems and communities, with the goal of ultimately giving back more than we take along the way.

Quality

Our steadfast commitment to quality puts emphasis on sustainability and thoughtful agriculture practices that are not only good for the Earth, but enhance the quality in every bottle of wine we make. Across our three origins, ongoing strategic investments in best-in-class winery infrastructure, vineyard and farming enhancements, and cultivation of an incredibly talented winemaking team ensure our products stand among the best in the world.

Innovation

We know that inspired colleagues deliver imaginative ideas and smart solutions, so we foster an entrepreneurial, collaborative environment that drives innovation in the vineyard, the cellar and the marketplace.

Community

Contributing to our community has always been important to us. Whether it’s working alongside nonprofit groups or supporting youth and causes we believe in, we look for opportunities to help meet local needs and build enduring community strength.

Our History

Inspired by the Fetzer family’s pioneering leadership in California wine and trailblazing approach to sustainability, we continue to push the envelope in redefining sustainable practices and innovating across our portfolio. Our history is full of events and milestones marking our dedication to innovation, impact and quality.

VCT Family

1883

Viña Concha y Toro is founded by Chilean politician and businessman Don Melchor Concha y Toro.

1933

Viña Concha y Toro is listed on the Santiago Stock Exchange and makes its first export, setting the stage for a global export business in years to come.

1963

The Casillero del Diablo brand launches, beginning a new era of wines crafted with complexity in mind.

1968

In California, the Fetzer family crafts its first commercial vintage and kicks off one of America’s great winemaking stories. Guided by Barney Fetzer, the Fetzers go on to build a legacy in Mendocino County while bringing a dream to life: offering quality wine, responsibly crafted, for everyday enjoyment.

1983

Building on the growing popularity of Fetzer wines, the Fetzers open the Valley Oaks Food & Wine Center in Hopland. During its 23-year tenure, this visionary hospitality center plays host to celebrity chefs, passionate gardeners and thousands of guests who travel from near and far to experience the farm-to-table lifestyle and Fetzer wines.

1985

Then-winemaker Paul Dolan hires Dennis Martin as his assistant. When the Fetzer family sells the business to Brown-Forman in 1992, Martin becomes director of winemaking and remains on board when Chile’s Viña Concha y Toro acquires Fetzer in 2011. He retires as vice president of winemaking in 2015, after 30 years with the company.

1987

We begin farming organically for Bonterra Organic Vineyards, long before organic products become widely available in America. The inspiration for farming this way was simple: organic grapes produce the purest expressions of the grape varieties and the land on which they are farmed.

Don Melchor

1988

Don Melchor, the first ultra-premium wine in the Chilean wine industry, launches.

1990

Long before sustainability was a trend, the Fetzers and their colleagues looked for ways to farm and make wine in harmony with the environment. As early as 1990, they begin tracking and reducing waste and energy use. Thanks to this legacy, we are proud to be certified TRUE Zero Waste and to operate on 100% renewable energy today.

1993

Wines bearing Bonterra’s name and the phrase “made with organic grapes” debut. The wines’ signature style—offering purity of flavor alongside balanced character—lays the foundation for a loyal following, one that continues to flourish today while contributing to America’s growing passion for the organically farmed wine category.

2010

Our winery is certified for sustainable practices in the first year of the Certified California Sustainable Winegrowing program. We adhere to guidelines promoting sustainable winery practices day after day, harvest after harvest, and vintage after vintage.

2011

Viña Concha y Toro, Chile’s largest winegrower and exporter, purchases the company from Brown-Forman. Viña Concha y Toro brings over 130 years of expertise and passion in winegrowing to its stewardship of our landmark California winery.
